The Olympic Village of Athens, originally built to house athletes during the 2004 Olympic Games, is now home to approximately 2,500 low-income families. Isolated from the surrounding city, it is characterised by empty streets, limited public life and abandonment by the state. In contrast to the optimism surrounding its construction, the village can be seen as a symbol of unfulfilled national expectations.
Olympic Art Park is an attempt to transform the public spaces of the Olympic Village into a contemporary art park. Through an open call, residents were invited to propose artworks under their real names or artistic pseudonyms. In the first stage of the project, the proposed works exist only through 25 labels installed at locations selected by the participants. Each label identifies the artist, title, year, technique, materials and dimensions of an unrealised work. Their eventual realisation constitutes a possible second stage of the project, but is not the responsibility of either the participants or the curator.
Collectively, the labels reflect local expectations for public art while commenting on the mechanisms of contemporary art and on the relationship between residents and public administration—a relationship shaped by unfulfilled promises and the absence of concrete action.
